Zinden Farm’s “Hoeing Day”: A First Step Toward Revitalizing Abandoned Farmland
On January 11, 2025, Zinden Farm conducted a controlled burning on “Hoeing Day” to revitalize abandoned farmland. This initiative aims to make effective use of unused agricultural land in the region and create a sustainable farming environment.
Background: The Increase of Abandoned Farmland in Shiraoka City
In recent years, Shiraoka City, Saitama Prefecture, has seen a rise in abandoned farmland due to a shortage of farmers and an aging agricultural workforce. If left unattended, weeds and pests will spread, leading to the deterioration of the local landscape and agricultural environment. To address this issue, the first step toward farmland restoration was taken by carrying out a controlled burning to remove weeds and improve soil conditions.
Future Prospects: Efforts Toward Sustainable Agriculture
Taking this controlled burning as a starting point, the land will be restored for agricultural use, contributing to the revitalization of local farming. Moving forward, we will collaborate with local farmers and residents to cultivate new crops and promote environmentally friendly farming practices. Additionally, we plan to share information with other regions as a model case for sustainable farmland utilization.
Zinden Farm remains committed to contributing to the development of local agriculture and environmental conservation.
